Police in France shut down illegal rave that drew over 2,500 people – New York Post

1 min read

French police finally shut down an illegal rave near the city of Rennes which had drawn more than 2,500 celebrants from across the country.

The party had been raging in a warehouse since Thursday in defiance of the country’s strict coronavirus lockdown requirements, Reuters reported.

Initial efforts to clear out the revelers Friday had been met with violence, with the defiant youths hurling rocks and bottles at police. At least one cop car was torched.

The situation had become so out of hand that France’s Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin called a late-night crisis meeting Friday to assess the situation, according to the BBC.

The party — which was expected to go until at least Tuesday — was only finally broken up after the arrival of police reinforcements.

More than 1,200 people were given official citations as they left the venue and police are planning to prosecute the organizers of the event. Lighting and musical equipment was also seized at the scene.

France has the highest coronavirus numbers in Western Europe with more than 64,000 virus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.
